"Nef of Winchelsea" — New Model Kit from "Ships of Pavel Nikitin" We are pleased to present a new project from "Ships of Pavel Nikitin" — the DIY model kit "Nef of Winchelsea". This ship, dating back to the 13th–14th centuries, was part of the fleet of the Cinque Ports Confederation — one of the key military and economic alliances of medieval England. The Confederation played a major role in coastal defense and trade, with vessels like this being central to its naval strength. The "Nef of Winchelsea" project logically continues the 1:32 scale series and complements the existing Viking ship kit "Oseberg". The reconstruction is based on the town seal of Winchelsea, which depicts a similar ship. The project’s authors, Evgeny Troppmann and Pavel Nikitin, relied on the works of Werner Zimmermann, von Fircks, and Werner Damman. Although few original sources have survived, special care was taken to capture the spirit of the era and recreate the appearance of a typical vessel of the time. The "Nef of Winchelsea" kit has been designed with exceptional precision and great respect for historical authenticity. Every detail — from the hull architecture to the finest fittings — has been meticulously crafted. The scale matches that of the "Oseberg" kit, allowing you to create a coherent collection of ships from different eras. With its high quality, flawless detailing, and careful material selection, this model is a true work of art in the world of ship modeling. "Nef of Winchelsea" is not just a kit — it’s an opportunity to touch a great era, bringing to life the history of courageous seafarers and glorious maritime powers. Historical Background The "Nef" was a type of ship widespread across Western Europe from the 12th to 14th centuries. These vessels were the workhorses of medieval trade and warfare, combining the characteristics of cargo ships and warships. Winchelsea, located on England’s southern coast, was a key member of the renowned Cinque Ports Confederation — a union of five ports granted special privileges by the Crown in exchange for military support and maritime security services. Ships like the "Nef of Winchelsea" were designed with tall forecastles and sterncastles, making them easier to defend during attacks. Their flat-bottomed hulls allowed for convenient loading and unloading in shallow ports. The model is based on the depiction from the town seal and supplemented by research from leading scholars in medieval shipbuilding. Although few archaeological findings remain, the creators have strived to reconstruct the ship's appearance with the utmost historical respect. Kit Features: High level of detail based on historical sources Authentic hull and superstructure design 1:32 scale matching the "Oseberg" model Ideal for historical modeling enthusiasts and students of medieval maritime history This kit offers not just the chance to assemble a unique exhibit but also to immerse yourself in an era when seafaring shaped the destinies of nations.
